Split Spit Mound, a painting and video installation by Toronto artist Amanda Boulos, is an intrusion into personal history, military conflict, and the duality of cultural identity, that is cleverly concealed in fantastical abstraction.

About

Diagrammatic works attempt to rationalise emotional and social forces that often seem beyond a single individual’s control. Alternating between this geometric simplicity and a distinctly Baroque exuberance, Boulos explores the duality of her identity as Lebanese and Palestinian, and geopolitical influence on the intimacy of home. In her most elaborate paintings, the complicated narratives Boulos expresses are skillfully composed to evoke tapestries, making subtle association to the medium’s narrative role across the Middle East. Split Spit Mound resuscitates the role of iconography, personal mythology, and the preservation of geopolitical narratives by depicting elements of personal history and found footage.
