The Lido Stores is delighted to present Spiderwoman, an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by Canterbury based artist Laura Mars.
About
A singer, self taught artist, a life long interruptor, a woman with power, voice and presence, much like the lady herself, Laura Mars paintings demand attention. Stream of consciousness musings, characters battling, laughing, taking up space, Spiderwoman puts the strength of the feminine at the centre of this exhibition. Heavily worked in oil, acrylic and mixed media Laura’s paintings contain a dynamic aesthetic jostling with energy and unspoken but deeply felt sentiment. The salon style hang adds to the feeling of claustrophobic, intensely lived experience, inviting us to experience the world as she does. Albeit temporarily.
Spiderwoman
I'm very creative
and precise
I weave my magic my wonderweb
I'm not spinning you a line
unless you're fly
I'm the woman in black a femme fatale
a widow in my prime
I could kill the world
trap it in my design
doesn't it look pretty all spun out like lace
the droplets of dew hang like sweat on your face
are you afraid
don't be on my account
I'll be very gentle
when I wipe you out.
Laura says of her work;
I have long been influenced by Louise Bourgeois's spider concepts.
I am Spiderwoman, I have always been Spiderwoman She is my go to character when I am feeling weak and trapped and not in control,my alter ego and all she represents empowers me with everything she embodiesand helps me deal with the things I can't change in my life. I use Spiderwoman to convey woman, strength, gossamer vulnerablity, sexual entrapment, control, usefulness, cleverness, industrious creativity, intuition and victory,
