The work reflects Simon's link to Southwark; it’s people and history. It’s a Psalter; a book collecting spiritual ideas and reflecting on human nature. It is more than a summation of individual works.
About
͞It’s probably been the past 18 months, two years _ the actual production of (Southwark
Psalter) _ but I’ve been thinking about it for the past four years, in total. It’s been under
development.
I was for a long time interested in Illuminated manuscripts, particularly Arab ones.
͞It kind of came together for me … I was reading about the Lindisfarne Gospels, and how that
was made by one man*, apparently. And it was an act of veneration in itself, like a spiritual act
in and of itself, and he or she** made most of the colors from local ingredients, molluscs, and
things like that.
͞So, (that) kind of triggered for me (the idea) of taking something that was moving away from
needing a gallery space … to be significant, to being about the actual effort that was put into
developing it … and the idea that you could almost pick it up and carry it away under your arm:
An art work, an art gallery.
