Goodbye Julia, 2023, highlights the emotional costs of maintaining the veneer of “peace” or normality. The film opens with the death of First Vice President Dr John Garang de Mabior, who led the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army, and the rage that erupts in the streets of Khartoum, Sudan. Mona and Julia, two women from radically different social positions, are thrown into proximity within this political climate. Both characters resort to differing modes of deceit to evade the fate of their social positions.
