Soundings is a performative listening event which acknowledges the perception of sound as an embodied activity, engaging senses beyond the boundaries of audition.

About

Rather than seeking a single description of hearing or listening, Soundings aims to create a space in which different perspectives can coexist. The programme features live works from:

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley

Rowland Hill

Jessa Mockridge

Jo Pester

Karolina Stellaki

More TBA

Each artist has been invited to respond to these ideas by adapting pre-existing live work for this context, and to include non-audio approaches or sound equivalences (such as subtitles, vibrations, visuals, gestures, movement etc) in consideration of audience members of different hearing capacities.

Organisers of Soundings:

Dyveke Bredsdorff (1989) co-curates ilyd an online artist-run exhibition space for sound art. Visual artists are invited to make new works in sound and to have a month long exhibition. ilyd is based between Copenhagen and London, exhibiting artists first experiments with the medium. ilyd is a strictly non-visual exhibition space experimenting with sound as ways of seeing. Since ilyd’s opening in 2016 it has exhibited 30 artists, hosted a 6-month curated program by Shell Like, and is now extending its program to include physcal manifestations such as Soundings. New sound works are uploaded monthly to www.ilyd.nu / @ilyd.nu.

Rowland Hill (b.1989) is the founder and co-director of Video Jam, an award winning platform dedicated to curating, commissioning and presenting moving image works with live sound. Since 2012 she has organised over 60 live events in a variety of spaces including a hotel rooftop in Colombo, an allotment in New York City, numerous kitchens across Manchester, and one of the UK's oldest synagogues. www.videojam.com
