About

SoundCamp returns to the meadow at Stave Hill over the first weekend in May. We invite you to join us for a free programme of activities exploring the ecology and acoustics of the site. These will be led by:

  • Sarah Angliss, composer and historian of sound whose music reflects her obsession with defunct technology and English folklore. She will explore the art of inter-species music and reflect on human attempts to control nature and bird song.
  • Iain Boulton of the London Bat Group will lead a bat walk on Saturday evening.
  • Ceri Buckmaster of Invisible Food will lead a practical workshop foraging and preparing wild food.
  • Rebeka Clark, site manager once voted Southwark’s ‘woman of the year’ has worked at Stave Hill since 1986. She will lead an introductory site walk.
  • Geoff Sample, leading recordist and ornithologist,  author of the Collin Guides to Bird Songs and Calls and Warbler Songs and Calls of Britain and Europe. He will lead a dawn chorus walk and talk about recognising and analysing bird song.
  • Jez Riley French, sound artist and curator working in composition, field recording, and improvisation. His hydrophone workshop will investigate the wet ecology of the site's ponds, streams, and remaining docks.
  • Dan Stowell, researcher applying machine learning to sound. He will present new techniques in machine listening and signal processing to analyse soundscapes with multiple birds.
  • SoundCamp will be workshopping new Raspberry Pi streambox kits, installing a listening tent, co-ordinating the Reveil live broadcast which tracks the dawn chorus around the world, doing lots of remote listening and celebrating 30 years of urban ecology at Stave Hill, the world’s first ecological park.

There will be delicious food by Leon Lewis (https://www.facebook.com/LeonsWildFoodWalks/) throughout the weekend, and breakfast and coffee on Sunday morning.

Tell us you’re coming. Booking is essential to camp and advisable for workshops and walks contact@soundtent.org
