KCCUK presents the first London solo exhibition of acclaimed South Korean artist Sora Kim, marking her nomination as ‘2015 Artist of the Year’.
About
The exhibition centres on Kim's project 2,3, a new conceptual performance created specifically for the show. Taking place at precisely 11pm on 13 September, the piece involved 15 performers who enacted a score written by Kim. They performed simultaneously, for 2 to 3 minutes, wherever they were at that particular moment, scattered around the globe from Seoul to Mexico City. In the exhibition Kim presents the audio and video documentation of the performances as a time-based installation, allowing visitors to create their own experience of the performance that took place. Exploring questions of togetherness and visibility, the work questions the basic conventions of performance. Challenging convention and investigating our relationships with one another are hallmarks of Kim’s practice and have established her as one of the key Korean artists of her generation. Sora Kim lives and works in Seoul.
‘Artist of the Year’ is the KCCUK’s major annual award programme, introducing a key aspect of Korea’s vibrant contemporary art scene to UK audiences.
The jurors for this year’s award were Jonathan Watkins (Director, Ikon Gallery), Emily Pethick (Director, Showroom), Binna Choi (Director, CASCO) and Je Yun Moon (Curator, KCCUK).
