Featuring photography, 3d works, moving image and text, Everything is a Bird represents the joyful interaction between the work of two artists and their practices. Both have a background in photography, and the works in this exhibition reflect the fascination they share, and the tension they perceive, in working between the controlled language of conceptual photographic practice, and the drive towards self-expression.
The title, Everything is a Bird, examines, in relation to the photographic image, the inherent instability of subject matter. It is a provocation through which the artists explore – through dialogue, and process-based experimentation, the capacity of one subject to reside in, to inhabit another subject; that is, the possibility for a subject to become, in photography, a whole other thing.
In Everything is a Bird, the intention and purpose that motivates much of the artist’s individual practices has been displaced by more contingent, unconscious, and spontaneous imperatives. Through the realignment of works, both visual and text-based, new dialogues are generated and alternative meanings proposed, in a transformative process where the connection between meaning and subject is understood as fluid, imaginary, in flight.
