For the fourth time, Sonic Territories, the festival for sound art in Vienna's Seestadt, will immerse visitors in unusual worlds of sound. From July 1 to 4, the focus of this year's festival is on new forms of interaction with sound.

About

Under the motto "What's between your head and mine?" artistic director Mimie Maggale explores the subtle changes in our current togetherness and interpersonal relationships. Unimagined spaces of thought open up in distance, where closeness is redefined.

With a daily program with free admission, the art and music festival attracts visitors to Seestadt to explore sound art in the public space at Eva-Maria-Mazzucco-Platz and around the lake.

In cooperation with TransArts / Die Angewandte, the festival impresses with a subtle sound parcours. Curated by Richard Eigner, selected sound works by local and international sound artists will be placed around the lake using speakers. Leerstand.Gallery brings Sebastian Schager's "Disco Vitae" to Seestadt and the class for Digitale Kunst / Die Angewandte deals with forms of isolation, among other things, with "remote sandbox: manifest".
Performative interventions by Aleyda Rocha and Machin in Flux, a documentation and cartography of time and environment by Sunjoo Lee (KR) & Ko de Beer (NL), complete the daily program with free admission.

On three evenings in the FABRIK, experimental sound art finally meets live techno from the Viennese club scene. With live sets by Therese Terror, Rosa Anschütz, elektro guzzi, Shayma & Seba, ausgesprochen:neu, Zosia Hołubowska, Austrian Apparel and Akali Akali.

Oliver Hangl finishes the festival off on Sunday with his Army of Synths. With Markus Jakisic, Elise Mory, Karolina Preuschl, Michael Tiefenbacher and Clemens Wenger, he invites to a walking concert with synthesizers through the Seestadt and makes it a premiere.

> Soundparcours | TransArts/Die Angewandte presents selected sound works by international sound artists
What was an insider tip in 2020 will be enhanced this year due to the current regulations. Guests will experience the subtle sound parcours curated by Sound Artist Richard Eigner (Ritornell, Lektor, TransArts / University of Applied Arts Vienna). In 2021, an international open call was announced for participation in the sound parcours. A total of 150 submissions were registered. In addition to students of the course, internationally recognized sound artists from Chile, Germany, Greece, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, among others, are represented this time with partly atmospheric, partly playful sound works in public spaces. Sounds will draw attention to themselves via "hidden" loudspeakers at various locations in the Urban Lakeside.
Curated By: Richard Eigner (Ritornell, Lector, TransArts / University for Applied Arts Vienna) and Mimie Maggale (artistic director, Sonic Territories)

> Sound installation | Leerstand.Gallery presents “Disco Vitae”
A club experience awaits visitors to Leerstand Gallery's exhibit. Founded during the pandemic, Leerstand.Gallery transforms vacant business premises into extraordinary pop-up exhibitions.
For Sonic Territories curator Stella Reinhold-Rudas presents "Disco Vitae" from 2019 by Austrian artist Sebastian Schager in a new context. A living disco, the light and sound installation relates socio-cultural contrasts and pre-pandemic club culture.  Though this piece suggests opposites, at  the heart of the work is the festival theme,"What's between your head and mine." "Disco Vitae" literally means "Learn to Live," but also recalls  pre-crisis club culture. In this light and sound installation, Schager not only animates three central works, but makes the entire space breathe. A living disco.

> Sound installation | Digitale Kunst/Die Angewandte presents “remote sandbox:manifest”
Under the direction of Martin Kusch (Associate Professor Mag. art., Digital Art / University of Applied Arts Vienna), "remote sandbox:manifest" was created in the pandemic year 2020. The self-playing sound machine and installative arrangement is also a metaphor for the search for artistic strategies to understand isolation as a productive substance.
Six monitors on metal mounts and five musical instruments are placed in the exhibition space so that they are viewable from as many angles as possible.
Concept: Martin Kusch, Marie-Claude Poulin, Rini Tandon
Participants: Sara Anzola D´Andrea, Manuel Cyrill Bachinger, Hanna Besenhard, Lucy Carrick, Aral Cimcim, Ferdinand Doblhammer, Marian Essl, Ulrich Formann, Kilian Hanappi, Jakob Hütter, Anton Iakhontov, Bi-in Jin, Haris Kahriman, Johannes Krumböck, Hanna Mikosch, Isabelle Orsini-Rosenberg, Azalea Ortega, Vasiliki Papadopoulou, Elisa Pezza, Sebastian Pfeifhofer, Luca Sabot, Jakob Schauer, Hans Schmidt, Patryk Senwicki, Verena Tscherner, Anastasia Voloshina, Agnieszka Zagraba

> Performative intervention | rest as a human right
Everyday sounds and the right to rest as a human right are the central themes of the performative intervention by Mexican artist Aleyda Rocha.
For her participation in Sonic Territories, she has developed a sound exercise where we will look at small gestures of everyday life that allow us to make space for rest  within  the sonic spaces and situations that already occupy our lives. Rest is a human right. We must see rest as a foundation for our freedom and liberation, and not something that is frivolous and wasting our time.

> A premiere at Sonic Territories | Walking Concert with synthesizers and head sets
There will be a reunion with media artist Oliver Hangl, who after last year's successful "Army of Guitars" once again invites you to a walking concert through the Seestadt - this time as ARMY OF SYNTHS - feat. Markus Jakisic, Elise Mory, Karolina Preuschl, Michael Tiefenbacher and Clemens Wenger.
