An experimental dance film installation based on Lucia Joyce and 'Finnegans Wake' by James Joyce.
About
SOMEWHERE IN THE BODY is an experimental dance film installation by Áine Stapleton centred around Lucia Joyce, a talented dancer and daughter of the celebrated Irish writer James Joyce. The production explores how Lucia influenced the creation of her father's iconic tale, Finnegans Wake, in which she appears in various guises. The theme of light runs through this work as it did throughout Lucia’s life; her name, taken from Saint Lucia the patron saint of the blind, is described as meaning “light giver."
The production delves into Lucia's various characters in the book and explores references to her dance career, as well as the presence of male figures such as uncles, brothers, and fatherly characters. It also examines Joyce's references to dancing women throughout the ages and the male gaze. The film features exquisite and nuanced performances by dance artists Colin Dunne and Katie Vickers, based on texts related to Lucia's characters in the book. Additionally, light sculptures by co-collaborator, light artist Pat Kramer, appear in the film and are integrated into the installation. With a unique soundscape based on Finnegans Wake and narration by Joycean Scholar Finn Fordham, Somewhere in the Body reveals the psychic spaces inhabited by Lucia and her father.
The film has a running time of 32 minutes and will be shown on an hourly loop at specific times. Drop-in visitors are welcome, but booking is advised due to limited seating. Please indicate your preferred hour when booking your free ticket here: https://eventfrog.ch/somewhereinthebody
