About

The Smallest Gallery in Soho is delighted to present a new installation by Damien Frost. The title of the work is ‘Soho Tableaux’ where Frost has created this wonderful image in a style reminiscent of the tableaux vivants of classical art. Taken during the time of Pride it features people Frost originally stopped on the streets of Soho as strangers to capture their portraits. The image encapsulates just one part of the wider mosaic and spirit of Soho, documenting personalities you might see as you walk through the Soho streets at night in 2018. This is at a time when they are becoming less visible due to the increasing commercial changes throughout the area that have led to the closure of many clubs and venues that these people frequently used.

About the artwork

Welcome to Soho. A place where you can be whoever you want to be.

Have you ever seen these people as you walk through Soho? Turning the corner from Old Compton Street into Dean Street? Or crossing Wardour Street into Broadwick Street? The people you see in this image are all around you, but are becoming less visible due to the increasing commercial changes throughout the area that have led to the closure of many clubs and venues that these people used.

Taken during the time of Pride, Damien Frost has created this wonderful image in a style reminiscent of the tableaux vivants of classical art. It aims to encapsulate the diversity of the Soho personalities in 2018.

The image was printed onto three large pieces of fabric to hang in the window like a triptych.

The printing was supported by Contrado who are always looking to discover new talent and work with emerging creatives. On learning about The Smallest Gallery in Soho’s new display it became a perfect partnership to collaborate on.

Shoot venue: Blacks Club

Lighting design: Syntax Lighting
