Lydia Brockless was born in High Wycombe, and after completing her art foundation at Buckinghamshire New University, went on to study for a BA in Fine Art at Leeds College Of Art. Shortly after, she was awarded a month-long residency at The Art House Wakefield in December 2014. Since then, she has exhibited in London, Liverpool, Leeds and Minnesota, USA. She is represented by Brodsgaard Art Projects, based in Earl's Court.
Sophie Giller was born in Norfolk, after her art foundation year in Brighton, she studied for a BA in Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College Of The Arts UAL, during which time she spent a semester abroad at Purchase College, New York. Since graduating she has exhibited in London and Norfolk, and has just been awarded a year-long residency by Bloomberg New Contemporaries at One Thoresby Street studios in Nottingham.
Both Sophie and Lydia were selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2015, and exhibited at Primary and Backlit in Nottingham, and the ICA in London. They were invited to produce new work for a duo show by Ellie MacGarry, exhibitions co-ordinator at Assembly House. This will be the third show at the newly relaunched Lady Beck project space.
For their new body of work, the artists have set out limitations to their use of materials, to include only textiles, wax and soap. Both have used textiles extensively in their previous work, with an interest in manipulating fabrics and fibres. With these new works, they are exploring themes of labour, decay, durability, transformation and impermanence.
