A concept installation by Clive Burton

HARTS LANE STUDIOS presents: HARTS LANE STUDIOS as PALIMPSEST ARCHICTURE ‘SOCKET & SEE' A Concept Installation by Clive Burton 20 June 2014 6-8 pm Palimpsest : being a page of a scroll or a book that has been scraped or washed clean in order to be used again. Palimpsest Architecture: a term often used to describe the accumulated iterations (repetition) of a design or feature of a site; whenever spaces are rebuilt or remodelled evidence of its former use can be used or remain. For this site specific installation in Harts Lane Studios, Clive Burton takes the original now defunct, many times painted over, electrical plug socket, found on the far right hand side wall of the Studios, to create a mould for multiple casts to be embedded in the remaining walls of the space. The result is that the building's interior and its inherent history as it exists now is very subtly transformed and becomes the art piece itself. The minimal installation draws attention to the already existing aesthetic of the shell of the building and its historical character as a once motor cycle repair workshop. About the artist: Within the broad field of sculpture and installation Clive Burton's work encompasses both mixed media and material process using and often combining three dimensions with two, and concentrating on the material and spiritual ‘presence' of the physical object and tableaux. ‘My current engagement revolves around concepts relating to the ridiculous and the ludicrous; cross wiring, paradox, hybrid and oxymoron; chance from order, the related and unrelated; the functionless and functional, serendipity and ill-cross reference towards aesthetic purgatory'. Clive Burton is a member of The London Group. He has exhibited extensively both in the UK and internationally and his works are included in many private and public collections in the USA and UK. He has tutored at Central St Martins and Camberwell and in 2008 he founded ‘1dea5pac7‘ art space in Peckham, London.
