SMALL WONDERS
BY KATIE GOODWIN
18th-21st September 2013
12-5pm

ArtLacuna is pleased to present the premiere of Small Wonders, an immersive 3D film exploring the lives of micro-organisms and protozoons living within the surface-water of lakes & ponds. The film is the result of a collaboration between the artist filmmaker Katie Goodwin and microbiologist and UCL Honorary Senior Lecturer Terence M Preston and was produced over summer 2013. Drawing from over 40 years of Preston's research into the movements of these tiny organisms, some of which are human pathogens, whose habitat cover the majority of the Earth, the artist has created an abstract-narrative short film.

Using enticing microscopic imagery on 16mm film from a then cutting-edge 1972 scientific experiment, cine footage of children fishing and swimming in ponds and lakes and 3D projection technologies the artist hopes to transfer this wonder and fascination for an unseen world to the viewer. An abstract surround-sound audio track of fragments of recorded conversations with Terence, a compelling and enthusiastic storyteller, will also be created in collaboration with composer Wayne Urquhart.

ArtLacuna will also host a Q&A panel discussion at 3pm on Saturday 21st September featuring the artist, Terence Preston and Esther Leslie, professor of Political Aesthetics at Birkbeck College, chaired by artist Alex March. The film will tour to further arts venues, universities & film festivals at home and abroad. This project was supported by a Wellcome Trust award and made possible by the generosity of Terence M. Preston.

Katie Goodwin is a British-Australian South East London-based fine artist filmmaker who mainly works in moving image. She's a self-confessed cinematic magpie gleaning most of her source material from the cutting room floor of the film production process. She seeks to reveal what the audience never sees, reprocessing and exposing moments that would otherwise be lost forever.

In 2011 Katie was Artist in Residence with Pixel Palace in Tyneside and won the Jealous Print Prize for Wimbledon. Earlier this year she was awarded the Transformations Project and the resulting film Six Metamorphoses with Ovid premiered in to a sold out audience at Sheffield's Showroom cinema in May 2013; it is currently touring around the country. Her films have screened at Wro Biennial in Wroclaw 2013 and the Tate Modern, Site Gallery (Sheffield), Contemporary Arts Space Tasmania, and in numerous prestigious film festivals across the world including Animac in Spain, Euroshorts in Poland, Les Sommets Du Cinema D'Animation in Canada and the Wimbledon Short Film Festival. Her list of film credits includes several Harry Potter films, Baz Luhrmann's Australia & Charlotte's Web. She studied art at Wimbledon School of Art and Goldsmiths College, London.
