Join us for two hours of dedicated artist only time in Freud’s final home.
About
Be inspired by his extensive collection of Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities and of course the study which houses his world famous psychoanalytic couch and desk.
Also on display will be turner prize-winning artist, Mark Wallinger’s exhibition Self Reflection.
For Self Reflection Wallinger will install a mirror across the entire ceiling of the iconic study offering visitors a dramatic new perspective effectively doubling the space. In the artist’s words: ‘The relative posture of the sitting analyst and the recumbent analysand are latent in Freud’s chair and the couch. We can easily imagine his patient’s self-reflection.’
Placed in the garden will be the sculpture Self takes the form of the most basic expression of what it means to exist as an individual: the letter “I,” as a free-standing figure. In the context of the Museum the sculpture has obvious intensity of meaning; the formation of the id, ego, and superego is predicated on knowledge of the self and how it is constituted.
Bring sketchpads and pencils (no pens, charcoal, pastels or paint please, unless for use solely in the garden).
You are welcome to stay at the Museum after this time and enjoy Freud’s home and garden (English weather permitting), with the exception of the study.
An additional session will also take place on Thursday 11 August.
