Off the Wall Sizzling Summer Show

About

Off the Wall, is Wales' premier, modern, contemporary art gallery which features art of the highest quality from some of the most talented artists both in the UK and internationally. Off the Walls' annual summer show is a chance to catch up on earlier exhibitions, highlighting our most popular artists as well as showcasing some new ones. If you have not yet visited the gallery, now is the time, during the summer months, to take some time with us with a chance to buy work from a fantastic collection of art that is not only modern & contemporary but likely to be very special. Elena Kourenkova Elena is a Russian artist based in Scotland. She takes her inspiration from eccentricities and peculiarities of life around us, and that very special Russian chaos, that she also nostalgically misses. Elena wants to provoke a comment, a reaction, and an emotion. She wants to make you smile. Her subjects and characters are always taken from everyday events. Sometimes they might seem emotionally isolated, keeping themselves to themselves-even when they are clustered in groups-but they are not lacking emotions, they only express them in their own way. Some of them present themselves full of self-importance, others just go about their business; some might imply something very absurd and not entirely cheerful in their very idea, but things are not always what they seem. She tries to present the subject so it is slightly exaggerated and sentimental, and always filled with emotions. Russians are guided by their emotions, not by common sense, and this has an effect on all her work. Born in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), Russia, in 1966. Graduated from an Architectural Institute in 1989 and moved to Moscow, where she worked as an architect until the beginning of Perestroika, then worked as an interior designer. She has exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, Paisley Art Institute and Aspect Prize Annual exhibitions. Ken Allum Ken lives and works on Anglesey. He studied art at foundation level at Kelsterton College, and fine art at degree level at Falmouth School of Art. He later undertook a post graduate certificate in education at Didsbury College and has combined a career in teaching art with developing his own work. Ken has a broad range of work; from large portraiture to landscapes and abstracts. His work has been selected for exhibition at the Royal Academy and Mall Galleries in London, and has held a solo exhibition at Smith's gallery Covent Garden. Most recently he took part in a group exhibition of contemporary portraiture at the Lloyd Gill Gallery. Louise Collis Originally from the South Wales Valleys, she graduated from Bath Spa University in 1998. She then worked full time in Bath as well as producing artwork and promoting herself as an illustrator, taking part in group exhibitions and exploring themes and techniques. Louise now lives back in South Wales with the beautiful mountains and fantastic coastline on her door step, she is inspired by the changing colours, light and history of the landscape. she takes her sketchbook everywhere and can often be found sat on a hillside sketching on a sunny day or inside her car/studio on a rainy day. She now works part-time as a designer so that she can spend most of her time on her paintings. Louise has recently had painting displayed and another short-listed for The Cork Street Open 2012. Nicholas Ward Nicholas Ward currently lives in Pontypridd South Wales. He studied painting at Treforest College of Art, under Brendan Stuart Burns where he completed his foundation studies, he completed his BA Honours in painting at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1998. Nicholas has been exhibiting his work throughout the UK and has sold work internationally. His work is constantly evolving, always striving to create a sense of place and time, the landscape of the South Wales valleys and surrounding areas has always been a powerful influence Nicholas`s work. His pieces are created using a process of sketching on location using mixed media and completed at his studio.
