About
SITTING ON RUINSHannah Hewetson
For the project space at Schwartz Hannah Hewetson presents new work combining wall paintings alongside paintings on canvas and paper. By bringing the painting off the support, the artist attempts to make a direct link between the painted mark, the viewer and the space.
Treated in a similar fashion to the works on canvas, the wall paintings are washed out and repainted, with a meditative, reverent concern for the intricacies of laying paint on a surface. Uncovering and highlighting the shapes found in between the layers, the paintings take on a ghostly presence, as both framers and questioners of the validity of the other works. Each painting is made for another, all offer an alternative potentiality.
In the works on paper and canvas, shapes interconnect and overlap conjuring something between a space and thing. By re-working existing paintings on canvas, a new parameter emerges for a new painting. Compositions and motifs from previous works are repeatedly painted to ensure a swift and even handing of paint. Remembered shapes are redrawn and eventually adopt a new presence.
