The first exhibition in radical bookshop Freedom Press, located in an ally next to Whitechapel Gallery, artists Wes Gilpin and Cecelia Johnson have collaboratively worked on the project ‘Site // Relief’.
About
The project seeks to explore the public / private nature of the location of the bookshop. Located in an ally in an increasingly gentrified area of London, the pair have focused on the ally, the passage between the two institutions as the starting point for the work.
Wes Gilpin and Cecelia Johnson are two artists working and living in London, Wes is from Plymouth and Cecelia is from the Medway Towns. Both explore elements of their practice individually and also work and curate together on a number of projects including a discussion group called SHITCRIT, which seeks to engage new audiences in talking about art as well as seeing it.
Freedom Press is an independent, radical bookshop. Co-op controlled by its volunteers, Freedom runs Britain’s oldest anarchist press and its largest bookshop. Read more on the history of Freedom on their website.
