ZiZi Gallery is to present the first solo exhibition of Karl Bielik's paintings in London. Born in Britain in 1967, Karl Bielik has exhibited in New York, Berlin, Prague and Lisbon, and is now based in London permanently. Bielik's multilayered paintings offer simple visual puns alongside extracts of dark and upbeat stories, and pay homage to the influences of Cohen, Carver, Schnabel, Rothko and Schwitters. These large-scale mixed-media works draw upon variety of sources as inspiration, from Bielik's own lyrics, to overheard conversations, graffiti and more general musings on language and communication. They may initially convey contradictions and disassociated themes, but on closer inspection the partially hidden elements reveal further possible dialogues and extracts from personal experiences.
