Sensitive, pastel, landscape paintings by Gillian Crossley-Holland alongside still-life, ceramic studies and vessels by Maggie Williams.
About
Maggie Williams and Gillian Crossley-Holland are exhibiting together for the first time since they met at Canterbury College of Art in the early 1970’s when studying Graphic Design. Both artists enjoyed initial careers as graphic designers in advertising and publishing and then took different paths and now create paintings and ceramics.
Crossley-Holland takes her inspiration from the landscapes of the Suffolk/Norfolk borders where fens and coastal imagery inform her sensitive pastel paintings. Wide skies mirror watery landscapes to create evocative transformations onto paper. These are contemplative works of observation, colour and mark.
Williams creates clay tableaux and shelves of flattened vessels that retreat from the three-dimensional into drawing. Familiar objects once made for use have been observed as their own subject matter. There is an understanding and clarity in these forms. Alongside the still-life studies are generous and undulating ‘sea-bowls’ in watery turquoise and blues.
Both artists have exhibited widely in this country and abroad but Gallery 54 is delighted to host their first exhibition together, side by side.
