Shubha Taparia has created a collection of photographs exploring new details and multiple elements from her latest large-scale installation, highlighting construction materials and transforming them into just light and shadows.
Shubha Taparia has created a collection of photographs titled Spirit in the Inanimate, exploring details and elements from her large-scale installation Silhouette of an Unknown Landscape. The installation incorporated scaffolding and other construction materials, transforming them into just light and shadows. Focusing on abstraction, the photographs have become new independent works.
Inspired by encounters with sunlight on scaffolding seen in an urban environment, these arrangements reveal an extraordinary aesthetic of shadow and light. Industrial materials that are usually overlooked and traditionally used to conceal, support or contain, have been transformed into subjects in their own right.
The weightlessness and the quiet of these images subvert our perceptions of a building site, revealing an unexpected beauty in the seemingly mundane, and thus continuing Taparia’s theme of exploring the everyday.
Born in Ahmedabad, India, Shubha Taparia has been living and working in London since 2001. After studying Visual arts and Music in India, she completed her post-graduation In Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London, in 2007.
Her most recent exhibitions include: Memories and Might, a collateral project of Kochi–Muziris Biennale at Kashi Art Gallery (2018); Silhouette of an Unknown Landscape (open studio and site-specific installation) at the artist’s studio, London (2018); “Performance” (Performance) at Slate Projects (Averard Hotel), London (2018); Prossalendi’s Britannia – Contemporary Perspective, at the Ionian Academy, Corfu (2018); Point of Apoapsis, curated by Shubha Taparia at Prahlad Bubbar Gallery, London (2017); Landscape and Silence, a collateral project of Kochi–Murziris Biennale (2016); Averard Hotel, with Slate Projects, London (2016); solo show See In Your Mind’s Eye, at Kashi Art Gallery in Kochi, India (2015). She was as a finalist of The Creekside Open 2013 selected by Paul Noble and hosted by APT Galleries, London UK (2013), as well as a finalist of the Mostyn Open at Mostyn Galleries, Llandudno, UK (2011).
