About

Robin Michel (*1973, Vevey) and Shirin Yousefi (*1986, Tehran) work with distinct approaches. While the former produces artworks with an obvious plasticity that only awaits to be seen in the exhibition space – which he delights in refusing –, the latter produces forms only according to a context and following a methodology that adapts itself through the time and space of the exhibition. Yet both address the questions of distance, of those who are in the margins, or what is the margin itself, as well as challenging the very notions of the center and the periphery.

Thus, despite an apparent methodological confrontation, the two artists interrogate and sometimes criticize the centre of political, economic and artistic power. They are interested in the unseen, in forms intentionally evacuated. Therefore, they chose to approach Display art space – which aims notably to question the exhibition space as a form – as a common work space, by co-working or working side by side, inspired by the practices already activated in the place. Each of the artist’s research has become a method that leads to a common proposal.

Robin Michel (*1973, Vevey) et Shirin Yousefi (*1986, Téhéran) travaillent par approches distinctes. Pendant que l’un produit des œuvres dont la plasticité évidente n’attendrait a priori que l’espace d’exposition – qu’il se plait à refuser – pour s’offrir au regard, l’autre ne produit des formes qu’en fonction d’un contexte et selon une méthodologie qui s’adaptent dans le temps et l’espace de l’exposition. Pourtant, tous deux abordent la question de la distance – de ceux qui sont en marge, aussi bien que de ce qu’est la marge, en passant par une remise en question du centre et de la périphérie.

Ainsi, malgré une confrontation méthodologique apparente, les deux artistes questionnent et parfois critiquent le centre du pouvoir politique, économique, artistique. Ils s’intéressent au non vu, aux formes volontairement évacuées. En conséquence, ils ont choisi d’aborder l’espace d’art Display – qui a notamment pour vocation de questionner l’espace d’exposition comme forme – en un espace de travail en commun, de coworking, de travail en côte à côte, inspiré des pratiques déjà activées dans le lieu. Chacune des recherches élaborées par les deux artistes, devenues méthodes, donne lieu à une proposition conjointe.
