About
Colour and light are key tools for expressive outcomes in Rups’s work. Inspired by British coastal landscapes, colours have to be bold, bright, clean and clear. Her latest works have been created in-situ, at the water’s edge, using the power of waves and state of the tide to dictate outcomes. She drenches raw canvas in sea shallows and applies water-soluble pigment which is then manipulated by the force of the sea.
Her palette exudes optimism, joy and energy with bright neon pops suggesting sails, surfboards and physicality. The performance of the piece is as important as the finished result with conscious movement, stretching different muscle groups: active, physical and energetic.
With a free and intuitive process, operating within a dream state in a conscious act of “tuning out”, gestural, energetic marks are applied to the canvas with strength and vitality. Chance also plays a key part. Some of her works have been conducted with home-made, low-tech machines in order to diversify mark making. Concepts are rarely pre-planned and so, the work creates its own freedom.
