In our final show of the year, we travel back home, to Dalston. In SHIFTING SENSATIONS, East London’s globally renowned artist Lennie Lee exhibits a collection of works from various moments throughout his life-long artistic career.
About
Lee's perspective on life as a daily playground of urban necessities, political discrepancies, and cultural variations, brings forth a rich and versatile series of works that are inspired by his own different, transformative experiences. In his latest series of paintings -- a medium he indulged in after a difficult heart surgery restricted his movements away from performance -- death is a running theme. His bright, beautiful angels of death, cartoonish skeletons and secretive gazes are composed in calculated pop arrangements that are at once traditional and contemporary.
In each piece, the image reaches beyond its existing identity, becoming a spectacle of renewed contexts and combinations. The process follows the Dadaist manifesto of art: a painting is the making of two lines, which have been geometrically observed to be parallel, meet on a canvas, before our eyes, in the reality of a world that has been transposed according to new conditions and possibilities. This world is neither specified nor defined in the work; it belongs, in its innumerable variations, to the spectator. Everything is what it isn’t, and isn’t what it is.
What we are left with is a collaborative employment of mass culture, affirmations of the new era we live in, and artistic expression that exists in union with this state of mind. In many ways, Lee is the artist living as a piece of art.
The exhibition runs until January 11th, 2015*
About the Artist:
Lennie Lee is a South African-born artist living and working in London. His work explores the complex relationship between urban daily life and the life-styles, beliefs and rituals of more primitive cultures. As one of the original East London artists and curators, his home has stood as a landmark host for exhibitions and performances by international artists.
