About

 Looking back across time and geographical locations, we can see many different intentions of art and in turn, its impacts on viewers - from acting as a tool for spiritual reverie to documenting history; from challenging the status quo to conveying beauty.

The discussion will first present examples when an artwork challenged its traditional role or perception, opening up new forms and functions of art throughout history. Participants will then be asked to discuss their thoughts on the role of art today, and to share those moments when art personally challenged their expectations of what it could be and do. We will not only explore the past and present of the role of art but additionally question whether some roles are obsolete or if can we find them now fulfilled elsewhere in other fields of media.
