Louise Smart and Jane Dudley are artists who share an interest in what emerges and what is hidden.
About
Louise is interested in the traces people leave behind. Towns, buildings and institutions remain when the inhabitants have left. Imbued in the brick, plaster and discarded personal effects is a sense of abandonment and loss, the remnants of life without the living, decay and survival hand in hand. Photo-transfer techniques on mixed media adapting, enhancing and manipulating the image using sand and other mediums give a sense of age and corrosion, deterioration and endurance. Louise’s current work is inspired by Keith Waterworths photographic images of a visit to the site of the Chernobyl disaster.
Jane in her recent work seeks to represent the impact of institutionalization, whether imposed through enforced institutional living or more subtly through societal/institutional expectations. The imposition of beliefs, compliance and conformity to roles and norms undermines autonomy and individuality. Her work suggests that the variations of suppressing and oppressing Who I Am are infinite.
Anonymous and fragile sculptures morphing between abstract and representational, and large works of spontaneous mark making intend political evocation forming a series of monuments to those, and those aspects of ourselves, that are excluded – that are ‘outside’.
