Through a variety of innovative techniques, the five female artists represented here are looking outward to situate themselves in the world.
About
In an era characterised by an excessive proliferation of self-portraits, the artists deploy counter-strategies to represent themselves in their work, favouring a conceptual approach that uses objects or gestures in lieu of self-imagery.
The artists in Self-Abstractions succeed in offering an understanding of identity politics as existing outside the body and as being the product of systemic power structures such as culture, society, economy, history and technology.
