Secret Sentinels is a family of sculptures made from found objects and materials and glass tiles, created by the Society's former President Clare Burnett PPRSS.
About
Secret Sentinels by Clare Burnett is a family of sculptures made from found objects and materials and glass tiles. They are the result of a decade of work experimenting with robust, low maintenance approaches to colour outdoors that withstand heat, cold and water.
The sculptures are part of the artist’s questioning of the dilemmas of 21st century life, specifically the advantages and disadvantages of being watched. The protuberances which look out of each piece gently reference the surrounding ubiquitous cameras in security systems, doorbells, phones and computers.
Sited initially in front of the Royal Society of Sculptors in London (Summer 2023), they draw attention to new renovation which was led by the artist during her tenure as President. The pattern of the tiles echoes the newly cleaned and pointed Victorian bricks, and the theme of camera lenses reaches into the building’s history when the façade was installed by Court photographers, Elliot and Fry.
The sculpture is made, from start to finish, but the artist - from welded inner structure and CAD calculations to building the forms and attaching 25,000 tiles by hand and mixing different colours of eco-resin grout for each section.
The works are on view day and night outside the Royal Society of Sculptors, 108 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 6RA. After this they will be available at the artist’s studio in North Kensington.
