Seaview Gallery Walberswick opens its annual show with an exhibition of paintings, sculpture, hand thrown porcelain tableware and sea-glass jewellery by seven lauded, contemporary artists from Suffolk and Norfolk.

About

The coasts of Suffolk and Norfolk have attracted artists to its open skies and shorelines since the late eighteenth century when British gentlemen, unable to take the Grand Tour across Europe during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars often travelled closer to home instead.

Following this long tradition, leading British artists J.M.W Turner (1775-1851), John Constable (1776-1837), Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942), Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), Paul Nash (1889-1946) Stanley Spencer (1891-1959), John Piper (1903-1992), Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) Edward Seago (1910-1974) and Mary Potter (1900-1981 all captured views there. Moreover, while on a group holiday in Happisburgh, Norfolk in 1931, sculptors Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Barbara Hepworth (1903-1975) scoured the beaches together for pebbles to carve – and so began the first versions of the modernist masterpieces for which they were to become so well known.

Today, contemporary artists continue to be moved by the scenes they find there, and at this year’s annual summer show at Seaview Gallery Walberswick, seven lauded, local artists will exhibit works inspired by the Suffolk and Norfolk shores. Laurence Edwards’ acclaimed figurative sculptures will be displayed alongside evocative paintings by Kate Giles, Helen Napper, Andrew Pringle and Tim Fargher, who will also include bronze sculptures in the exhibition. Karen Downing’s minimalist, hand-thrown white porcelain tableware will join them and for the first time, Seaview Gallery Walberswick presents hand-made jewellery by Fiona Petheram of Drift Jewellery, who combs the beaches of Suffolk, The Isles of Scilly and Spain for sea glass to adorn her elegant earrings, necklaces and earrings.
