About
"In times of change, learners inherit the earth...while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists." Eric Hoffer
Proof are pleased to present RAW+, the second exhibition in a series documenting the impact of formal art education on the creative agency, idea formation and practice of Sean Rennison Phillips.
In what Rennison Phillips' describes as "the self fulfilling prophecy of Art", the artist examines the effects of exposure to critical theory, market trends and pre-existing discourse; doctrines of an almost formulaic production of art within institutions. This formula can then be applied to impart value; a BA Fine Art certificate on an artists’ CV can quantify worth before analysis of any work has taken place.
RAW+ has been heavily influenced by prevailing theories encountered through the suggested reading list from his BTEC Foundation Diploma Course and reproduced by tutors in partnership with the student demographic during group critiques. Undertones from this chain of artistic progression infiltrate the works.
Rennison Phillips' is aware of his actions confirming the ideology of art education and reinstating the power of institutions to create Art. However he welcomes this exchange as it provides tools to aid in traversing the assent of the societal ladder.
