John Hansard Gallery present a new exhibition, A Murmur, Repeated, by Irish artist Sean Lynch.
Beside a varied collection of artefacts, props and sculptures, Lynch presents a new video, shot in Southampton with collaborators Gina Moxley and Timmy Creed.
About
Time travel and spirit possession drive a surreal narrative where a bard from the seventeenth century ends up encountering the empty car park of an out-ofbusiness Toys R Us, Southampton's geothermal plant, IBIS hotels and the streetscape of the city centre.
Caught between a desire to fit into the constraints of the contemporary world and the seemingly liberal possibilities of a more poetic, distant life of the past, Lynch's central character offers up many opinions about the construction of public space and the role of history.
A new publication, featuring an essay by Kevin Barry and further writings by Sean Lynch will be launched in September on Thursday 26 September at the Gallery from 6-8pm.
