About

SEA WITHOUT SHORE chosen for REGENT STREET CINEMA first season

Following much ‘buzz’ and packed screenings, the art house gem Sea Without Shore has been chosen for the highly anticipated first season of the historic Regent Street Cinema on May 28th (8:25PM. Phone: 0207 911 5050 - 309 Regent St, London W1B 2UW - http://www.regentstreetcinema.com/programme/sea-without-shore).

Birthplace of British Cinema, the Regent Street Cinema is where the Lumiere brothers premiered ‘Cinemateque’ in 1896. Not open to the public since 1890, it has been completely renovated keeping its 19th century heritage.

A rhythmically captivating exploration of love and loss between two women at the fin de siècle, Sea Without Shore is directed by Andre Semenza and Fernanda Lippi, founders of critically acclaimed physical theatre company Zikzira, makers of ‘Ashes of God’. The impressive crew includes Glenn Freemantle, one of the world’s greatest and most experienced Sound Designers, Academy-Award® and multiple Bafta winner (Gravity). Prior to the screening on May 28th, Glenn will give a special Sound Masterclass and the film will be followed by a Q+A, including also directors, the composer Andrew McKenzie and DoP Marcus Waterloo.

“Dancing to the heart of grief.

A lyrical and entrancing meditation on loss.” The Guardian ***

“Unlike anything else you’ll see all year." Film Divider

"A truly cinematic work, extends the bounds of art.

It will haunt the viewer for a long time after it ends."

Eye for Film ****

“Raises the level of dance on film to dance as film.” Nicholas Minns, Writing about dance.

"Daring and ambitious. May be the precursor of a new wave of anti-narrative, dance-based cinema." Critics Associated ***

Following an amorous relationship abruptly cut short and set in 19th century Swedish forests, Sea Without Shore was photographed in cinema-scope by award-winning British DoP Marcus Waterloo. The original music was created by pioneering composer The Hafler Trio (aka Andrew McKenzie), using the cast’s sonic imprints.

The stream-of-consciousness narration features words by 16th century poet Katherine Philips and 19th century poets Renée Vivien and Algernon Charles Swinburne whose agnostic, visionary poetry lend the film an exhilarating quality.
