About
Screen printing on to textiles involves pushing dye (ink), through a screen on which a stencil has been made, on to the surface of the fabric. A stencil can be made with paper or with light sensitive emulsion. This 2-day workshop will give you in-depth knowledge of the entire process and equip you with the necessary skills to start working independently on your textile projects. We will explore a range of image making techniques including handmade and digitally prepared stencils.
Day one will focus on handmade approaches and explore ways in which you can create both gestural and controlled marks through materials such as chinagraph pencils, wax crayons, Indian ink, acrylic paints and paper cut-outs. Day two will cover screen printing from digitally prepared images.
The studio is a low toxicity environment. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience who may need a refresher. Places are limited to 6.
The course will cover:
• Image preparation; digital and handmade stencils
• Screen preparation; coating, exposing and cleaning
• Ink preparation; mixing coloured pigments with binder
• Setting up and printing on a fabric table
• Fixing and curing your textiles
• Safe use of emulsion and cleaning agents
• Safe use of exposure unit and power washer
