An inter-disciplinary body of work which began as a research and development artist residency with the Josef Herman Art Foundation Cymru, Ystradgynlais. Using film, archaeological artefacts and drawings, Rhys links the industry of the area with her travels in Eastern Europe...
About
Coal Tree Salt Sea is the outcome of Sarah Rhys' research and development residency at the Josef Herman Art Foundation, Ystradgynlais. Rhys focused on the landscape exploring Herman's descriptions of his native and adoptive home, the industry it produced and the community that served it.
Rhys then travelled to eastern Europe, again making links between the landscapes of Poland and the Czech Republic to those of south Wales. Studying the science of the land and the science of industry plus the symbolic importance of materials in each culture, Sarah Rhys responds to these concepts through installation, lens based media, drawings and artefacts.
