An evening talk by artist and West Dean College alumnus, Sarah Cliff

About

Sarah Cliff is an experimental printmaker and assemblage artist. Her practice is a personal response to cultural and historical shifts in attitudes and the dark and humorous philosophical dilemmas they present. She is a serial dabbler in any process, materials and learning activities that might lead to a fresh expression of an idea. Since completing her MFA at West Dean College in 2017, she has exhibited work in printmaker exhibitions in London and New York.

Sarah was selected as Artist in Residence at Ochre Print Studio, 2018, where she is now a tutor in life drawing and printmaking. Managed by a team of professional artists, Ochre Print Studio is the largest open access fine art printmaking studio in the south east offering annual artist's residencies, workshops, exhibitions, talks and weekly creative activities for adults with learning difficulties. Recently appointed to the management team, Sarah is responsible for Outreach and Marketing.

Sarah's talk will give candid insights into the decisions, mistakes, importance of community, self-examination and mind-set adjustments that have impacted her practice since graduating. She will reflect on some of the less obvious aspects of a fine art education that have proved most valuable to her.

She will describe her preparations and decision-making for her first solo exhibition with residency at Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope Gallery and Museum in 2019. This exhibition, The Ballad of Gibbet Hill, will be the realisation of an idea developed over two years since graduating.

This artist's talk is hosted by the full-time Fine Art programmes at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. Students can study for a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art or MFA, with various funding options available to support students throughout their studies.
