“Being visible can be dangerous. But being invisible eats away at your soul”
artist Maud Sulter 1960-2006

Digital Artist Residency is proud to announced Samantha Thole as our first artist in residence. For the online residency, Thole will create a series of works that focus on the social identity of women as Internet users and content producers. Through photography, video work and performance, images are to be placed in the intimate context of the human body, culminating in an experimental live streaming of a performance.

Thole creates a discourse of artistic authorship throughout her various artworks, projects and collaborations, as her work eloquently actualizes the past, without historicizing the present. Concepts of the “digital” and the “physical” female persona with the anonymity of online networks, can be just as dissociative as they are liberating. Thole implements (art) historical narratives of our contemporary reality in a distinctive material and physical visual language.

Thole lives and works in Rotterdam, graduating with an MA Fine Arts from Sandberg Instituut in 2012. She has performed and exhibited internationally including at Roodkapje, Rotterdam. the Bruce High Quality Foundation, New York. and Power Station of Art, Shanghai.

Digital Artist Residency is a online platform which provides space for digital artists to create and display new artwork. The initiative aims to provide a context for artwork created using digital processes, exploring the boundaries of art and technology.
