This series of aerial photographs by Rachel Spender were shot using medium format film cameras, whilst flying in a light aircraft with an open door.
The prints were hand made by the artist in a traditional darkroom.
About
“Flying over the East Anglian coastline you are quickly aware that the landscape is neither flat nor bleak but visually fascinating and rich in an ancient wilderness ecology which is both natural and manmade.
The natural formations and marshes in this intertidal zone have evolved over thousands of years. Some of this landscape remains untouched by man, whilst others have been reclaimed for agriculture, grazing and fishing. The exciting visual juxtaposition of the these two opposing forces gave rise to the making of these images.
The textures, patterns and sculptural formations are caused by the effects of tides on shingle bank and saltmarsh - the natural breakdown of crustaceans and seashells - and what happens when fresh water meets salt water, and when humans, across the ages, have interrupted this natural flow of events.
All is revealed at low water, when the tide is right out, and the low winter sun casts long, sharp shadows.”
