g39 is exhibiting Mike Kelley’s film Mobile Homestead alongside a major new sculptural work by S Mark Gubb, commissioned by g39 and Artangel. This is part of a multifaceted project for Gubb, happening concurrently at SYSON Gallery and a roadside billboard on an American interstate.

About

Revelations: The Poison of Free Thought, Prt II is a new sculptural work that S Mark Gubb has made, responding to Mike Kelley’s work. This is part of a multifaceted project by Gubb, all under the umbrella title of Revelations, this work expands on an increasingly apocalyptic vision evident in Gubb’s work and thinking.

Mike Kelley conceived Mobile Homestead as a public sculpture specifically for Detroit, the city in which the artist was born and spent his formative years. It is a full-scale replica of the single-story ranch-style house in which Kelley grew up, located in the Detroit suburb of Westland. Replicating the artist’s original family house, the new “homestead” was conceived by the artist as a place to house a variety of community activities including a community gallery. Kelley, who died in Los Angeles in 2012, was determined that Mobile Homestead be relevant to the cultural interests of the local communities. In that spirit, the structure has been mounted on a chassis and can be driven around the city and its environs, offering public services on its travels.

The mobile home itself remains in Detroit where a permanent space is being developed for it. G39 will be exhibiting a three-part film that tracks the Mobile Homestead and it’s interactions with communities in America.

Alongside this, Gubb’s installation evokes the curiosity of abandoned funfairs, shanty-towns, dystopian sci fi and 80s horror behind a veneer of humdrum respectability. He is always looking for new and interesting ways to produce and show his work. He often seeks some form of collaboration within his work, whether in its production or research, engaging with particular communities, subcultures or professionals. He is interested in the power of the object as a vehicle for communication, whether that be a grand sculptural statement or something more subtle or fleeting. His work aims to provoke a wider discourse around history, culture and belief systems (personal, political, theological), inviting us to reflect on our desire and ability to impact upon the world we inhabit.

These two works together take part in a conversation about personal and cultural histories and the spaces where subcultures and other communities meet. Supported by Artangel Collection & Mike Kelley Foundation
