About

‘The Great Escape’ brings together the work of two female British Artists Ruth Mulvie and Claire Knill.

Knill and Mulvie both share a preoccupation with colour and light, Knill exploring her interest through sculpture and kinetic forms and Mulvie through painting and print.

Claire Knill is a Hove based artist working across various disciplines including sculpture, textiles and digital collage. Through kinetic sculpture Claire creates moments of pause, reflection and connection within the busy environments of our lives offering moments of escape. The works meditative yet playful quality brings a sense of calm to the spaces within which they are hung.

Using hand-cut metals and acrylic to create evolving three dimensional work, Claire’s style is characterised by intriguing colour combinations, geometric forms and a joyful refined aesthetic. In this particular installation Knill combines the moving sculptures with sound to create an immersive gallery experience.

In this most recent group of paintings created throughout the lockdown period Mulvie juxtaposes two themes familiar to her work. The staycation and opposing idea of exotic escape. Some of the paintings reflect familiar local places and landmarks and some are wildly surreal -patchwork compositions derived from anecdotes and letters and stories of William Randolph Hearst media tycoon and Julia Morgan. The building represents Hearst Castle in San Simeon ‘The Enchanted Hill’.

The paintings are carefully crafted using layers of paint and pigment in ever brighter wilder colour. This time Ruth explores the use of fluorescence in the work.

Central themes in her work explore the play of light and shadow, the uplifting power of movement and colour and how it can influence our mood and emotions.
