About
Ruptured Wave is the fourth curatorial partnership of Lauren Bevan & Thomas Hjelm, responsible for the Royal College of Art rooms at Saatchi Gallery, London Grads Now 21. The exhibition brings together a collective of four tactile and emotive artists, split over two floors in the heart of Soho, over London Frieze Week. Collaboratively the works address the duality of presence and absence in an increasingly digital landscape.
The body is used as a vessel for memory, absorbing and melding to experiences, internalising events and wearing it as skin. Punctured, stained, and reinforced, this object led exhibition asserts the perseverance of physical experience as the artists navigate through digital connectivity, simulation, and fallible nature.
To rupture a wave is to confront the perpetual with a vessel of great force; determined to reach a destination, whilst uncompromisingly forging a new path. The artists use the body to expose vulnerabilities through an array of materials and labour-intensive processes, with both the aid and
resistance of digital technologies.
