Join us for Sam Schmitt’s end of residency presentation as part of the RELAY project
About
A new painting and installation will be on view, along with documentation of Sam’s time at hARTslane. The space of the gallery has changed over the past month, with plant sprouts occupying unexpected places and a towering figure guarding this haven.
Sam Schmitt explores the strategies developed by vegetal life to reproduce in the brick and mortar of the city. If only they were allowed to take over the porous urban infrastructure in waves of ecological succession, plants would eventually transform our neighbourhoods into what they used to be: forests. Ruderal Consciousness shows what Sam allowed them to do over the past four weeks working in the space.
At a time where a majority of people are thinking introspectively amid the traumatisms of 2020, this exhibition focuses on creating a space of escape and healing. It observes the regenerative potential of nature and invites visitors to a fleeting presentation. The depleted soil used in the show has been enriched and rejuvenated by growing nitrogen fixing clovers, and will be donated to local residents to continue it’s cycle in the area after the exhibition.
The exhibition is curated by Nikos Akritidis and the RELAY project hosted by hARTslane is supported by Arts Council England.
We are looking forward to welcoming you & please bring a mask.
