Paul Ashurst paints rubbish in the streets near his home/studio in Camberwell, South East London. These rubbish paintings reflect Paul’s philosophy that everything we look at can be seen to be beautiful, especially ignored or forgotten things
About
“They tied in with a lot of building work that was being done to my home/studio so that I felt that for quite few weeks I was living surrounded by chaos, and that was reflected in my new subject matter, but I wanted to make the chaos beautiful and contemplative. All the paintings in this series are on a small domestic scale, and also with quiet colours and plain compositions.
I often reference famous artists that I like in my paintings as found elements, from Rothko to Malevitch etc, but these new paintings I feel are more in the realm of Morandi, not that this time there are any direct quotes, just small things quietly looked at.”
Paul Ashurst shows his work regularly in London and San Francisco as well as the rest of the UK and Europe. He recently had a solo show called SE5 in San Francisco’s Bonnafont Gallery.
