The Royal Society of Sculptors is pleased to announce the next ‘Reintroducing our Pioneering Women’ event. Author and historian Phyllida Shaw will speak about the life and career of Alice Meredith Williams ARBS (1877-1934).

About

The Society’s Pioneering Women project aims to shine a light on the lives, careers and legacies of some of the Society's early female members. This event will focus on Alice Meredith Williams ARBS (1877-1934). Williams was one of the first women to become a member of the Society, becoming an Associate member in 1928.

Born in Liverpool in 1877, Alice trained at Liverpool School of Architecture and Applied Art. A student exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, in 1900, featured more than thirty pieces by her, in different media and won her a £60 scholarship from the City Council. This took her to Paris, where she spent five years studying, and making work until, in 1906, she married fellow artist Morris Meredith Williams and settled in Edinburgh. Her best known works include ‘The Spirit of the Crusaders’ at Paisley and works for the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.

At the event, author and historian Phyllida Shaw will speak about the life and career of Alice Meredith Williams. Phyllida is the author of ‘Undaunted spirit: the art and craft of Gertrude Alice Meredith Williams’, the first book dedicated to Williams’ work.

Please note that this event will be recorded.
