This September, The Mayor Gallery is excited to present ’Rock Stars & Strawberries’ (title inspired by the artist’s slang terms for the characters he depicted) which will be the first London solo exhibition of the self-taught New Orleans artist Roy Ferdinand (1959 - 2004).
About
A selection of 18 works from 1990 – 2004 will be exhibited.
Working from the late 1980s to the early 2000s Ferdinand bore witness to gun violence, drugs, prostitution and police corruption to a soundtrack of Jazz and Rap music during a troubled period when New Orleans was then the murder rate capital of the United States. Using everyday materials such as marker pens and paper from his local convenience store, Ferdinand captured violence and despair alongside the humour and emotion of the African American neighbourhoods at this time.
