Northern Romantic marks a number of departures and returns for Ross Taylor. This series of ten paintings presents a stylistic shift in Taylor’s work, made more apparent by a transition in medium from drawing to painting. It is also the first solo exhibition Taylor has dedicated to the landscape, with previous solo exhibitions including a combination of landscape exteriors and fractured architectural interiors, painstakingly rendered in pencil on paper. Working with acrylic paint demands a certain pace, one that for Taylor seems to elicit an energetic quality verging on the hallucinogenic. An energy, not merely defined by tempo, or rate of application, but a certain kind of intensity just beyond control, yet with an overall air of soothing calm. A kind of peace in letting go.
