About

As part of ongoing support for student talent, Aspex Guildhall is delighted to present the artwork of Rosalba Morello, a recent Fine Art graduate from the University of Chichester.

Morello paints serene, light-filled spaces, that invite the viewer to enquire where the location is through the nature of memory. The artist believes that all individuals perceive differently and when we encounter a place we leave with just a fleeting and changeable recollection.

The artist said: “My work experiments with the act of painting, with the uncertainty of what happens when painting is driven by an interaction between decisions of the conscious mind and impulses of the subconscious. In a sense the works form themselves, letting the paint discover marks that create purpose and perspective.

I seek to embrace the unknown through a methodology that is continuously changing, fragmented and spatial. I look for the ongoing lines that suggest the structure of experience, combining these with evolving fields of colour and light in search of atmospheres that feel like they can reveal the truth of an image. The intensity of colour is important, with certain colours signifying the character of memory”.

The exhibition is one of many presented by Aspex Guildhall - a partnership between Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays and the Portsmouth Cultural Trust (Portsmouth Guildhall), launched in early 2014.

Aspex will also be exhibiting the work of graduates from across the South Coast as part of their annual exhibition ‘Platform’, opening to the public on Thursday 15 September 2017.

You can find the selection of artworks in the Cafe of Portsmouth Guildhall until Friday 15 September.
