The first series of work, Neon Portraits, are based on donated nude selfies; aiming to re-appropriate the nude for the female gaze and celebrate the diversity of the unedited female form.

The second series of more recent work expands upon the neon portraits to ask questions about the expression of women's agency in the online sphere, abstracting found sexual images into neon sculpture. The work aims to start a conversation about pornography, the singular beauty ideal, and the challenges of navigating a world that increasingly fuses our online and offline experiences. 

Alongside the exhibition, Romily is inviting responses to the themes of the exhibition including objectification, media, beauty standards, body image, pornography, sexual agency, the internet and safe spaces. In collaboration with Gallery II at the University of Bradford, these responses will help inform a zine that will be launched at the end of the exhibition.

There will also be a drawing activity led by artists Bryony Pritchard and Gerry Turvey 5.30pm-7pm 3rd February. The workshop is free and open to all abilities. Please email a.withers@southsquarecentre.co.uk to book a place.

COMMUNITY ROOM | South Square Reflects 

This January we take a look into the South Square archives, exploring the centre’s rich history though the ephemera which has been left behind by those which have treasured, developed and adored the facility.

In the community room, we present an array of designed exhibition leaflets from the history of South Square, since its opening in 1984, reflecting the changing nature of local, national and international art exhibited at South Square. A backdrop of posters, photos and flyers provides an insight into the triumphs of this community building, and helps us to uncover a rich history in community connections, heritage, learning and art.

The disappointment expressed by another photographer on deck gave me a perfect title for this collection, shot by incidental light onboard the Pride of York.

Part Two (2016) - A Different Light

Photographs from the same Hull-Zeebrugge ferry exactly two years later, taken as the boat began its voyage.
