Der Berliner Fotograf Roger Melis (1940-2009) gehört zu den Mitbegründern und Förderern einer ostdeutschen Autorenfotografie, die danach strebte, jenseits der offiziellen Propaganda das "pure Leben" zu erfassen.

Seine Aufnahmen entwerfen ein vielschichtiges Porträt der Ostdeutschen und ihrer Welt in den Jahren zwischen dem Bau und dem Fall der Mauer. Drei Jahrzehnte lang bereiste Roger Melis von Nord bis Süd das Land, das er unter der Herrschaft der SED als still und erstarrt empfand. In dichten, oft symbolhaften Fotografien dokumentierte Melis das alltägliche Leben der Menschen in Stadt und Land, ihre Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen, aber auch die politischen Rituale im realen Sozialismus.

Die von der Stiftung Reinbeckhallen ausgerichtete und von Mathias Bertram kuratierte Ausstellung ist die bislang umfangreichste Retrospektive der DDR-Fotografien von Roger Melis. Sie präsentiert neben bereits klassischen Aufnahmen viele bislang unbekannte Fotografien aus dem Roger Melis Archiv.
Die Ausstellung findet in Kooperation mit der LOOCK Galerie und dem Roger Melis Archiv statt.

Photographs from three decades of GDR

Hardly any other photographer documented the East Germans and their everyday experiences for so long, so intensely, and in so many respects as Roger Melis (1940 – 2009).

For three decades the co-founder and “Master of East German Photorealism” (Die ZEIT) travelled far and wide across the GDR, a country that he often found “silent” and “ossified” under the rule of the SED. As a critical observer and chronicler, Melis captured the urban and rural lives of people in atmospherically dense, often symbolic photographs. His empathetic portraits and careful reportages create a complex picture of East Germans in the years between the construction and fall of the Berlin Wall.

Curated by Mathias Bertram, the exhibition is the most comprehensive retrospective of Roger Melis’ photographs of the GDR. The 160 images show not only classic photographs but also many previously unknown photographs from his estate.
