About

THE EXHIBITION
A swirling swatch of color, deep and luxurious grabs our attention, the work is gestural, with feeling and emotion, applied to a shimmering gold background. Robert Weber’s paintings are figurative or completely abstract, sometimes incorporating text (of known authors, as well as his own) onto his canvases. His use of a gold background highlights their opulence and elevates them to a sacred, Baroque-like realm. While saints and spiritualism are important themes in Weber’s art, his works do not carry a direct Christian message or meaning. At the end of his studies at the UdK (University of the Arts, Berlin) he began painting what Weber calls “non-figurative metaphysical color spaces and at some point discovered that my image perspective corresponds to the so-called ‘reverse perspective’ in icon painting.” In the end, Weber feels the interpretation of his works lie within the viewer, he feels that everyone is free to have different reactions to or interpretations of his works.

THE ARTIST: ROBERT WEBER
Robert Weber was born in 1964 in Jena. He left East Germany in 1985 and began studying painting with Walter Stohrer at the UdK (University of the Arts, Berlin). He completed his post-graduate painting degree (Meisterschüler) in 1993. He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Germany as well as internationally and his work can be found in large churches as well as many private and public collections. Weber lives and works in Berlin and Bad Freienwalde.
