“The important thing is the abstract linear movement.” (Robert Schad)

About

We are delighted to be exhibiting the work of Robert Schad (*1953) for the first time in the Friese Gallery in Berlin after many years of collaboration in Stuttgart . The German artist studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and is considered an important figure in the European tradition of sculpture. He has received prestigious awards such as the Drawing Prize at the III. Biennale for Contemporary Art, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal (1982), the International Drawing Prize Joan Miró, Barcelona (1986) and the Grand Prize at the II. International Biennale for Sculpture in Obidos, Portugal (1989). From 1989-1990 Schad was a visiting professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Today he lives and works in Larians-et-Munans in the Haute-Saône department in France and in Chamosinhos in Portugal. He is known for his large installations in public spaces.

Schad's works combine two forms of design: drawing and sculpture. The drawings are the artist's elementary expression: of thoughts, ideas, abstraction. At the center of the work is the line - as the original form of human expression to abstract nature and connect it with human existence . His sculptures embody the movement from the drawings as a plastic line in space and make it tangible. Schad also conceives this dynamic as a force in the social and cultural living space that his sculptures occupy.

This interplay between the equal media of drawing and sculpture characterizes Schad's work in a unique way. The sculptures are choreographies that have become material and are based on the drawing, inviting the viewer to physically perceive other perspectives and the space. The inertia and dynamics of the material, moments of balance and imbalance invite an encounter with feelings of heaviness and lightness.
